2 Men Sentenced in Fatal Shooting of Mich. Singer Whose Hands Were Bound with Christmas Lights

A Michigan judge this week handed down sentences to two Ohio men behind the killing of a popular musician and singer who was found shot to death and bound with Christmas lights in her home six years ago.

Eugene Moore, 37, was sentenced to 20 to 55 years after also pleading guilty to second-degree murder in addition to a felony firearm offense, the AP reports.

Michigan State Police said Covington, 27, was found dead in her Van Buren Township home on June 23, 2017, just one day after she was last seen at a yoga class,PEOPLE reportedin 2020. She was shot in the head, behind the ear, and her hands had been bound with Christmas lights.

A third man implicated inCovington’s killing, Shane Lamar Evans, 34, was sentenced in May to 15 to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder, the AP reports.

According to court testimony from Evans, the men mistakenly entered Covington’s apartment after deciding they wanted to steal marijuana from her neighbor, WJBK reports. Once they spotted Covington watching a movie, they fatally shot her and wrapped her up in the Christmas lights.

A break in the case came in November 2020 with the arrests of Moore and Evans, and Groom’s arrest a month later.

Covington’s brother, D’Wayne Turner, mourned his sister in court on Thursday, describing her as someone who “touched so many people.”
