The crash happened just after 2:00 AM when the driver of a Honda Accord, driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 580, collided with a Kia Telluride.
California Highway Patrol’s Tracy Division explained in amedia releaseon Facebook that the vehicles “crashed head-on,” with the impact causing both vehicles to overturn.
Riding in Perez’s vehicle were a 35-year-old male passenger and a 2-month-old female passenger who were both transported to the same hospital with “major injuries.” A 4-year-old male passenger was also transported to the hospital for treatment with “minor injuries,” per the media release.
The incident caused all westbound lanes to be closed and traffic to be diverted as authorities investigated the scene. California Highway Patrol’s Tracy Division tells PEOPLE that authorities are awaiting toxicology reports to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in the accident.
